It protects us, regulates our body temperature and gives us our sense of touch. And that’s just the physical functions.

So, when it comes to your skin, we want to ensure just that.

And, this is the reason why:

My skin at 30 years old

I have suffered with problem skin all my life. From hypersensitive skin as a child, then severe acne in my teens, 20’s and into my 30’s. I’ve also endured breakouts of folliculitis and dermatitis.

So, I know how it feels to have unhealthy skin and I understand the frustration that this can cause.

THIS IS MY STORY

I spent over 15 years desperately searching for a solution to my problem skin.

Visiting numerous dermatologists, trying out all kinds of medications and treatments, but none of them ever seemed to work.

THE NASTY DRUGS

In my teenage years, I was given an extremely powerful drug called Accutane, also known as Isotretinoin.

The harsh side effects of Accutane did more harm to me than good. Such as:

  • Burning sensations on my face – needing to apply ice for some relief.
  • Cracked lips and nosebleeds – waking up from sleep to pools of blood in my bed.
  • Stinging hands and feet, aching joints and back pain – unable to play sports.
  • Depression and suicidal thoughts.

In fact, Accutane only made my acne worse and after several 6-month courses, it would have been illegal to be prescribed any more courses.

Throughout my twenties, I was given a variety of Antibiotics, known as Tetracyclines (such as Doxycycline, Minocycline and Lymecycline).

These came with less painful side effects but every 6 – 9 months I would need to switch to a different variation, as my body would develop an immune response. Their effectiveness would wear off and my acne would return, typically worse than before.

After long term use, my body started to become immune to all the antibiotics and their effectiveness became less until eventually, they stopped working completely.

Ultimately, over 10 years of using Antibiotics completely broke down my immune system.

THE CHEMICAL CREAMS

Throughout this 15 year period, whether I was taking Accutane or Antibiotics, my dermatologist also prescribed acne treatment creams to apply topically to my skin.

Such as Tretinoin (Retin-A) or Benzoyl Peroxide (Brevoxyl).

These medicated creams were so irritating and uncomfortable to use on my sensitive skin, they would feel like they were burning me. I would experience patches of redness and soreness, extreme dryness and peeling.

The skincare products contained such harsh artificial chemicals, they would bleach my hair, my clothes, and my bedsheets.

So I asked myself, what are they doing to my skin?

MY MENTAL HEALTH

Suffering with severe acne and being given these aggressive treatments had a hugely negative impact on my life.

I had no self-esteem or feeling of self-worth, which sent me on a downward spiral of agoraphobia and social isolation, depression and anxiety, obsessive and suicidal thoughts.

THE TURNING POINT

At the depth of despair aged 30 and still suffering with severe adult acne, I consulted my dermatologist and within 5 minutes decided to put me back on Accutane again.

No investigation was made to find the root cause of my long term skin problem. The approach was to rewind the clock back to my teenage years, ignore my 15 years of suffering and prescribe me the same devastating drug that did not work before.

A NEW START

I had lost complete faith in the dermatological profession and this was the moment where I realized I needed to make a change and find an alternative approach to conventional medicine and its treatments. I no longer wanted to put these invasive drugs in my body and toxic products on my skin. I felt my only option was to embark on a journey of discovery and self-therapy. This was when I first started learning about natural and holistic medicine.

Holistic health can be defined as an approach to life. Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to health considers the whole person and how they interact with their environment. It believes that both the physical and mental aspects of life are closely interlinked and the connection of the mind, body and spirit affect the overall wellness of as person. Conventional medicine often focuses on treating and suppressing symptoms, as opposed to always trying to determine the underlying causes of a condition. Whereas holistic medicine focuses on natural healing to address the root of the problem, through lifestyle changes and noninvasive remedies to enhance the body’s own ability to cure itself.

PRODUCTS

I wanted to create a range of handmade skincare products that followed this natural medicine approach. I had 3 key goals when developing my own skincare products:

1. To not use harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients that are toxic to the skin and can cause an adverse reaction that can irritate my sensitive skin and make my acne worse.

2. To use only the purest organic oils and ‘biologically active’ ingredients that have been used for thousands of years for their therapeutic benefits to the skin and body.

3. To be ethical and sustainable, such as being animal cruelty free and good for the environment.

SELF-STUDY

I extensively studied all aspects of the skin and the formation of acne comedones. I completed a diploma at a natural skincare course and learned how to produce the perfect formulations. I researched the therapeutic benefits of a vast range of organic oils and acquired knowledge on the most suitable ones for acne prone skin and each product type. Through numerous months of mixing a variety of organic oils and testing different formulations on my skin, I had found the most effective combinations and had developed a complete range of natural products that optimised my skin’s health. I proceeded to use my finalised range of natural products in a daily skincare routine.

LIFESTYLE

To support my new skincare regime I also made some key lifestyle changes in alignment with the holistic health approach.

Such as:

1. Eat a “clean” diet, avoiding processed foods, refined sugars and intolerants such as dairy and gluten which all create a toxic burden on the digestive system.

2. Adopt stress management techniques to balance the mind, removing negative thinking, be more mindful and accepting of my insecurities and imperfections.

3. Incorporate a better relaxation and sleep routine.

4. To exercise regularly and allocate time to pursue things that I enjoy and fulfill me.

SUCCESS

To my absolute delight, within 6 months of using my new natural skincare products and adopting a holistic lifestyle, I was free of acne and had clear skin for the first time since the age of 15. I felt like I had been reborn. A physically and mentally stronger and healthier person, with a new found confidence and zest for life.

As my natural anti-acne system had worked so great for me and transformed my life, it motivated me to share it with the world to help others who share a similar experience. I have a passion to help all the acne sufferers out there who have endured years of ineffective, aggressive treatments, who are lost on how to clear their skin and do not know where to turn.

Through my own experiences, I have amassed a great amount of knowledge on the best way to promote healthy, resilient and radiant skin, and I am passionate to share all of this, to help people like you!

This is the inspiration behind Natural Dermatologist. My mission is to restore confidence and change the lives of acne sufferers. I hope by sharing my story, my products and my lifestyle blog with you, I am able to achieve just that.
